On August 5, 2023, the Sella River once again became the epicenter of excitement and camaraderie with the celebration of the 85th edition of the International Sella Descent.
This year, the event brought together more than 1,100 paddlers from 18 different nationalities, including participants from Australia, South Africa, various Latin American countries and Europe, who competed in more than 800 boats. Among the notable competitors were members of the Sirio-La Llongar Cangas Aventura Canoe Club, of whom we are immensely proud.
The 2023 International Sella Descent edition attracted thousands of spectators who gathered along the river to cheer on the paddlers. High-level athletes, enthusiasts, curious onlookers, and locals enjoyed the festive atmosphere that precedes the competition. The event began with an emotional speech by Olympic champion Lidia Valentín, followed by the traditional Asturian anthem and the cannon shot that marked the start of the race promptly at 12 noon.
The paddlers’ nerves were heightened, as usual, with the advancing clock. Warm-ups and cool heads, all accompanied by the sound of Asturian bagpipes. On the banks of the Sella, concentration was key. After all, the competitors have been preparing for a long time for this big day. As have the paddlers from the Sirio-La Llongar Cangas Aventura Canoe Club, which Cangas Aventura is proud to sponsor, training conscientiously for the event.
