How to Get Started in Caving

If you’re one of those people who always try to explore everything, who never leave a corner unchecked, a hill unclimbed, a street untrodden, a cave unexplored… Congratulations! You meet the main requirement to get started in caving: curiosity. Don’t know what this discipline consists of? Caving is a totally exciting activity that combines adventure sports with the exploration of caves and underground cavities in search of strange formations, flora and fauna, in many cases, unexplored by humans. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it?

In recent years, it has become a booming sport among the most adventurous. And it offers a combination that is very difficult to resist. It has a bit of climbing, a bit of hiking and mountaineering, a bit of canyoning and even scuba diving or rafting! Once you put on the explorer suit, the unexpected begins. You’ll have to climb walls, cross underground wells and rivers… And who knows what else you’ll find down there? Without a doubt, it’s a unique and exciting experience that’s very easy to fall deeply in love with.

There are countless caving routes in the world and they are very varied. They come in all levels of difficulty: seemingly impossible cavities for those who are experts in the discipline and others that are simpler and more manageable for those who want to venture into it for the first time. And caving is still an activity that requires technique and involves facing risks. Don’t forget that you’re underground! However, practically anyone can try the experience by following certain rules, going with the right equipment, and trusting professionals.

Basic Tips for Beginners in Caving

Want to know what you need to venture into the unknown through caving? Here are some tips to ensure your first time practicing the activity goes perfectly.

  • Bring the appropriate equipment with you. Keep in mind that caving takes place in caves and underground cavities where there is little light, little space, and many rocks, stones, and other slippery or sharp elements. To prevent this combination from ruining your fun, make sure to bring a helmet, resistant footwear with good soles and preferably waterproof, knee pads, elbow pads, warm clothing suitable for the activity (caves are cold and humid places)… And everything necessary to experience the activity in a safe environment. Important! It never hurts to bring a small first aid kit just in case, as well as flashlights or water.

  • Always check the weather forecast before entering a cave. Inside, there may be rivers or water currents that in case of rain could flood or cover and become dangerous. If it rains, better leave the exploration for another day.

  • Never practice caving alone. This is a group discipline. Entering a cave alone can involve risks, which is resolved by doing it in groups of more than 4 people. Because 8 eyes see more than 2, they control the space better, and in case there’s any problem, the 4 or more people can help each other or split up to exit and seek help. If you don’t know anyone interested in the discipline like you, don’t worry! You can join groups, clubs, or even become a member of a federation. Also, hire a company specialized in the activity that offers different outings with a specialized guide.

  • Don’t try to go beyond your abilities. Caving is often a very demanding sport that requires you to always keep your eyes wide open, as you never know what you might encounter around the next turn. If you’re new to the sport, go as far as you can and always follow the instructions of your guide or expedition leader. You’ll get further next time! Fatigue can cause you to make mistakes, and never forget that in most cases, all the progress you make on the way in, you’ll have to undo on the way out. You’ll need all your energy!

As long as you follow these small but important tips, the experience will be wonderful. Once you get started in caving, you’ll be hooked. And there will be no cave that can resist your curious spirit. Happy exploring!
