27 Years of Commitment: Respect for Nature

It’s no wonder that the natural setting that accompanies the winding Sella River during its course captivates everyone who visits it. And even more so for those who decide to descend its crystal-clear waters aboard a canoe. The Sella River Descent is one of the star sustainable tourism activities in Asturias, both for its incredible landscapes and for the many possibilities it offers to spend a most fun and special day doing sustainable sport, whether alone, with family, as a couple, or with friends. For all these reasons, thousands of people wish to experience it each year.

At Cangas Aventura, we are very aware of how fortunate we are to be able to enjoy this incredible environment and quality sustainable activities on a daily basis, as well as having the ability to share it with anyone who wants to experience it aboard one of our canoes. That’s why we greatly value the richness that the Sella offers us, and the fundamental pillars that guide our work every day are respect for nature and care for the river.

For 27 years now, Cangas Aventura has been using all means at its disposal to ensure the cleanliness of the Sella on its route from Arriondas to Llovio; and even in sections outside the usual Descent route. During this time, many actions have been carried out, both one-off and periodic, from cleaning tasks to awareness-raising work.

Sustainable Activities in Asturias

At Cangas Aventura, we not only promote sustainable tourist activities, but we also encourage sustainable sports tourism. Our commitment to the environment is reflected in each of our actions and in the way we operate, always seeking to minimize our impact and preserve nature.

The Sella River Descent is not only an exciting adventure but also a form of sustainable sport. By choosing sustainable activities like this, we help protect and conserve the beautiful landscapes of Asturias so that future generations can also enjoy them.

Practicing sustainable sports tourism is one of the best ways to connect with nature and contribute to its conservation. At Cangas Aventura, we are dedicated to offering experiences that are both exciting and responsible towards the environment, ensuring that our impact is positive and long-lasting.

River Cleaning Work

Each year, prior to the start of the summer season (the time when the Sella receives the most adventurers), Cangas Aventura mobilizes all its resources to carry out a major river cleanup. Likewise, once the season ends, the company’s staff again participates with all means at their disposal in these cleaning tasks.

Additionally, Cangas Aventura collaborates every year with different schools in awareness-raising efforts. On the other hand, on World Environment Day, Cangas Aventura always seeks to contribute its bit and help create social awareness regarding respect and care for nature. This year, it wanted to do so by lending its canoes and other necessary equipment for the Descent to the El Sella Canoeing Club. The members of the Canoeing School carried out a voluntary cleaning day of the river, which was organized by COGERSA.

All these actions help us create a favorable environment for the development of quality sustainable tourism and sport.

Awareness as a Prevention Method for Sustainable Sport

Keeping the river and its surroundings in optimal condition is not achieved solely through one-off actions, but rather it’s a long-term effort. That’s why, day by day, at Cangas Aventura we try to raise awareness among each person who trusts us to do the Descent about the importance of keeping the Sella clean and cared for.
A video reminds all adventurers at the beginning of the sustainable sports activity that the place where they are is a protected natural enclave and should be respected by everyone. Additionally, they are informed that all the waste generated during the journey can be stored until the end in the watertight containers provided for the activity. These instructions are included on a label placed on each container, so they are always kept in mind.

Let’s Take Care of the Sella!

Although it is hopeful to know that the waste generated in the Descent represents a very small part of all that is found in the river, sadly several cleanups are always necessary throughout the year for the river to enjoy the health and splendor that characterizes it. This is something that, with work, is expected to change. Let’s give back to the Sella all that it gives to those of us who enjoy it!
