Discover the Cares Trail.
Known as the Divine Gorge, the Cares Route fascinates everyone who walks its paths. It is a 12 km route to be done on foot, between Caín (León) and Poncebos (Asturias), the most spectacular and well-known hiking route in the Principality of Asturias, where nature displays its most hidden beauty.
This unparalleled and famous route begins in the village of Poncebos and runs through caves, bridges, and paths carved into rock. It’s a route that is difficult to do on your own since by road, the villages of Caín and Poncebos are about 100 km apart. So don’t let anyone in your group miss it! At Cangas Aventura, we make it easy for you by taking you to the start of the route and picking you up when you finish.
The Cares River flows through a gorge, crossing mountains towards the sea. Therefore, its walking route is on a path elevated above the river. Thus, its spectacular nature and moderate elevation change make it the ideal route for hiking.
A journey that you won’t be able to stop photographing. That’s why at Cangas Aventura we recommend that you fully charge your camera, smartphone, video camera… so that you can take home a complete gallery of what could be coined as a ‘spectacle of nature’.
The path throughout its route (except for small more complicated sections) is sufficiently wide – more or less a meter and a half – to walk safely and calmly. Although we always recommend watching the edges, as there are certain areas where the drop to the river reaches a dangerous height and verticality.
Tips for doing the Cares Route.
- During the course of this route, there is no protection on the side of the drop, so it is necessary to always be alert and not get distracted. Therefore, we recommend that if you suffer from vertigo, it’s better not to do it.
- The minimum recommended age for children to do the Cares Route is 12 years old, and it’s preferable that they always walk on the inside of the path.
- Since the route has many tunnels in rock, it is very important to wear appropriate footwear.
- Hydration is a very important part when hiking in nature. So you should keep this factor in mind and bring enough drink for the entire journey.
- When you encounter people, you should pass each other very carefully, giving the inner part of the path to children.
- If you do the route during summer, it is very important to include sun protection and a cap as part of the essential equipment.
Explore the Lakes of Covadonga
The Lakes of Covadonga are a natural paradise and the ideal place for hiking, especially if you do it with children. A circular route of low difficulty, where you will enjoy animals, vegetation, lakes, and even old mines.
The walk takes place on a comfortable paved path, where the first point of interest you find on the way is the Prince’s viewpoint, from where you can observe Lake Enol, and shortly after delight in Lake Ercina with the beautiful panoramic view it offers with the Picos de Europa in the background.
A little further on, you will reach La Vega el Bricial, also known as the third Lake of Covadonga. A place that receives this name because in times of heavy rains, a lake forms over the meadow and waterfalls appear.
And, after enjoying this spectacle, the return journey begins.
An unforgettable experience in a privileged environment, which exudes a special sensitivity for the natural beauty that emanates from these mountains and the need to preserve them. A jewel of the Asturian territory!
Recommendations for visiting the Lakes of Covadonga
- Comfortable footwear is recommended, because although the route is not complex, it has an uphill section and several steps, which can cause you to slip on rainy days.
- Even if you do the route in summer, don’t forget to bring a sweatshirt or light jacket.
- You should know that in the vicinity of Lake Ercina there is a small bar, but it is usually crowded, so it is recommended to bring water and some snacks to replenish your energy in the different areas set up for resting in the heart of nature.
